University of Utah Student dies in car crash
A 20-year-old U student died at approximately 8 p.m. Thursday after his car swerved to miss a drunk driver on westbound Interstate 80.
The student, Joseph “Hance” Henrie, was a passenger of 20-year-old Hayley O’Brien’s truck, along with two others, and was ejected from his seat after the car rolled. Henrie was the only passenger killed.
The truck swerved to miss the drunk driver, Karen Gallegos, who was driving the wrong way on I-80 near Echo Junction. Both O’Brien and the other passengers were taken to Salt Lake City area hospitals.
Todd Johnson, corporal with the Utah Highway Patrol, said that Gallegos got back into the eastbound lane and drove nearly 20 miles from the accident scene until being pulled over.
Police have taken Gallegos to Summit County Jail on charges of automobile homicide.
