Feb. 7

The Associated Students of the University of Utah Community Service Board invites you to make education kits for children in underdeveloped nations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the A. Ray Olpin University Union East Ballroom.

“Rising Sun” is playing at noon in the union’s Crimson Underground.

The Tanner Humanities Center will present a lecture by English Professor Barry Weller on “Dickens Against the Family,” at noon in Carlson Hall, Room 115.

Union Programs will present the film “American Beauty” at 1 p.m. in the union Theatre.

Terra Firma invites you to meet with a Peace Corps presenter at the same time they discuss upcoming club events during their meeting at 2 p.m. in 311 union.

Marilyn Hoffman from the Premedical Advising Office will give her first of three medical- school application workshops from 3 to 5 p.m. in the James Talmage Building, Room 130.

Marc Kirschner from Harvard Medical School will speak on “Signal Transduction and Actin Assembly,” at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

The International Center will hold a “Theatre in London,” information meeting at 5 p.m. in the Performing Arts Building, Room 101.

“The Chemistry of Bioluminescence: A Mechanistic Study of the Photoprotein Aequorin,” a lecture by graduate student Robert Horton, will be held at 10:45 a.m. in the Henry Eyring Building, Room 2006.

Sergei P. Balashov, senior scientist and research professor for cellular/structural biology from the Center for Biophysics at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, will hold a seminar at 11:30 a.m. in the Joseph Merrill Engineering Building, Room 2160.

The Society of Professional Journalists will hold an organizational meeting at 12:30 p.m. in the Languages and Communication Building, Room 2630.

The Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence will hold a workshop on “Writing a Statement of Your Teaching Philosophy,” from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Sterling W. Sill Center Large Conference Room.

Marcia McNutt, a Phillips Petroleum Distinguished Lecturer from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, will lecture on “How Hot are Hot Spots? A Cold Hard Look at the Facts,” at 4 p.m. in the Intermountain Network and Scientific Computation Center, Room 110.

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry will host lectures on “New Drug Approaches to Bacterial Protozoan and Parasitic Infections,” by Jerry Hinshaw, and “Investigations of the Biological Activity of Naamidine A, a Marine Natural Product,” by Robyn James. The lectures will be held at 4 p.m. in 316 Skaggs Hall.

“Spacetime Warps, Black Holes, and the Quantum: A Glimpse of the Future,” a discussion by Kip S. Thorne from Caltech University, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Wilmot Skaggs Biology Building, Room 220.

The Heterodox Economics Student Association will host a lecture on “Anti-Trust Issues Raised by E-Commerce and the Internet,” by Darren Bush, an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice and a former U graduate student, at 1:30 p.m. in the Business Classroom Building, Room 306.

A CTLE-sponsored discussion on “Library Resources to Support Your Teaching; Where Do We Go From Here,” will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Gould Auditorium of the J. Willard Marriott Library.

“Digital Humans: From Biomechanical Models to Simulated Surgery,” a seminar by Scott L. Delp, associate professor in the biomedical engineering division at Stanford University, will be held at 4 p.m. in the Biopolymers Research Building, Room 501.

A coffeehouse open-mic poetry slam will be held at 8 p.m. in the union Panorama Room.

“Israeli-Jordanian Joint Ventures: A Preliminary Analysis,” an address by Dan Laufer, an expert on Israeli affairs, will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Orson Spencer Hall, Room 255.

Dan Laufer will speak on “The Arab Boycott of Israel: Implications for U.S. Corporations,” from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. in the C. Roland Christensen Center, Room 115.

The Department of Music will hold its annual Honors Recital, showcasing student performers, at 7:30 p.m. in the Libby Gardner Concert Hall.
