A professor traveled more than 1,500 miles from Alaska to tell U students that he doesn’t understand Sarah Palin.

Clive Thomas, a political science professor from the University of Alaska Southeast, delivered a cursory overview of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s meteoric rise to fame at the Hinckley Institute on Thursday.

The overriding message of Thomas’ speech, titled “Sarah Palin and Alaska: Past, Present and Future,” was that Palin remains utterly enigmatic even to scholars such as himself who have been following her career since the early days.

A smattering of facts about Palin’s career, personal life and the political environment in Alaska provide the only guide to understanding Palin, Thomas suggested.

“A maverick is someone who is really unpredictable,” Thomas said, referring to the label Palin used during her campaign for vice president to paint herself as an independent reformer.

Alaskans are strongly opposed to big government, even though government agencies employ some 30 percent of the population, which is nearly twice the rate of most states, he said.

“Alaska’s political culture is, in fact, dependent individualism,” Thomas said. “That’s an oxymoron if ever there was one.”

Thomas said that Palin owes her fame and success not only to her ability to tap popular Alaskan sentiments, but also to her good looks and sheer luck.

He compared Palin to former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, arguing that Palin doesn’t have nearly the same skill as Meir but has managed to achieve political success anyway.
“If Sarah Palin looked like Golda Meir, she probably would not be where she is today,” Thomas said.

Thomas also touched on the former vice presidential candidate’s controversies, including her decision to resign as governor in July. He speculated that she wouldn’t run for the Senate in Alaska and probably wouldn’t win the Republican nomination for president in 2012.

I was actually at the forum... I didn't think he was harsh- he was simply trying to explain WHY she was so popular. He was trying to explain why she's such a phenomenon. I thought he was a good speaker.

I bet if he had been advertised as a comedic Colbert Report-esque presentation, the reception would have been much different. But if this is what my tuition and fees are going toward paying for.... well, let's just say I'm glad that I'm on my last semester. A completely irrelevant presentation, whether right or left.

Never mind that Obama has never been in charge of anything in his life let alone a small town in Alaska, but let's remember he's more qualified than Palin because his presidential campaign was a big management project. Sarah Palin is a successful politician because people like her despite the left's attempt to smear her.

It is comments from professors such as this frightens me for our students. To disagree with her on issues or even to describe any issues..(perhaps the professor can't read or was unable to access her well written platform of issues).but HER LOOKS is his major claim that she is successful. I wonder how the professor would do managing children and a baby and be campaigning and still being governor. She is folksy and speaks in a charming and I care about you way. His comments were as bad as the name calling of racist to anyone who would dare question our charming,good looking,charismatic president . To compare her to Golda Meir without describing how or why.THE professor needs a researcher..and take his political agenda back to alaska. I can't believe UTAH could have brought him in.

As one of his students I am very sad to see this. I knew he was traveling to speak about Palin and he told us that his speech was not about whether he liked or disliked her but rather about how she rose to fame, why she rose to fame and what is or is not working for her. In class he tries to be non bias and we can all tell he is more liberal then conservative. I was just really hoping he would have something good to say about her. This reflects badly on my school which i love so much! I think he will be giving a few of these at different universities and just hope he gets his act together. Unfortunately, the majority of Southeast AK is anti Palin. She did try to move the capital from Southeast to Anchorage which turned a lot of people against her. He is just one of the many teachers that are amazing at our school as long as they leave their political opinions at the door of the classroom.

Clive Thomas "doesn't understand Sarah Palin." Ok... so his solution is to do the following:
1) travel over a thousand miles AWAY from Alaska, even though;
2) Alaska is where he lives, and;
3) Alaska is where Sarah Palin ALSO lives;
4) the purpose of his trip is the TRASH her, and;
5) somehow in his mind it makes sense to do all of this in Utah.
I have no interest in his comments, and I can't understand why anyone else would either. But... to each his own.

Palin has been her own worst enemy....far more style than substance, underprepared and clearly a lightweight.

The far left is nothing more than pathetic children in adult bodies. I am truely sick of them and the Election of 2008 Exposed their evil, negative, lack of facts, lack of respect for the Constitution, lack of the respect for the USA and most of all their racist and sexist views.

Gov Sara Palin is a remarkable woman who is true to herself, respects and loves our Country.

Millions of people voted for her in the 2008 and not Senator Mc Cain who is a Far Left Progressive who would have not helped the USA and it's Citizens. He is out of touch with Americans.

Thomas is another filler in life. The just fill up space......nothing of value.

Clive Thomas wasted the U of U's money coming here from Alaska just to tell people that he doesn't like Sarah Palin. I don't think Clive Thomas would or could be elected to a major public office himself, because he doesn't have anything noteworthy to say. Also, he doesn't have a message that would appeal to anyone, except the left-wing hierarchy in the U of U Political Science department.

This is just too pathetic...I can't believe with all the mess going on in our present government and around the world that someone is still focused on trying to destroy Palin. I hope the University didn't pay good money to bring him here.
