U alumnus wins award for his business

James Lee Sorenson was honored as the first U alumnus to win the David Eccles School of Business Entrepreneurial Achievement Award.

Sorenson received the award at a luncheon held on Friday, Sept. 26.

"The award honors alumni for their abilities in demonstrating spirit, achievement and initiative in the creation of a startup enterprise," according to a recent statement.

Sorenson graduated from the U in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in accounting.

He won the award for success in his business.

Sorenson Media is a video compression technology company incorporated in the year 2000. Software products like Quicktime and Macromedia Flash have been significantly improved by incorporating Sorenson's technology.

Sorenson Media was and is the recognized leader in video services, video compression and video communications over the Internet.

The company has grown 600 percent from last year.

"[Sorenson] is deserving of this award and clearly proves that opportunities [are] abound for those willing to pursue them," said Jack Brittain, dean of the David Eccles School of Business, in a recent statement.

Sorenson has been a key contributor in helping launch the David Eccles School of Business Entrepreneurial (UTec) program.

Sorenson has assisted by, "helping [students] make contacts, personally spending time with them on projects and financially contributing as well," said Jennifer Stevens, spokeswoman for the David Eccles School of Business.

"With such a qualified field of alumni from the U, I am truly grateful to be selected as the first to receive the Entrepreneurial Achievement Award," said Sorenson in a recent statement. "The U's faculty and facilities provided me with an outstanding foundation to learn and develop entrepreneurial skills."
