At the same time the U is asking the Utah State Legislature for $15 million in repairs to its infrastructure, it’s asking for more money for new construction projects.
U President Michael Young went before lawmakers last week to tell them the U needs $100 million in infrastructure repairs, but because the state doesn’t have that sort of money right now, the U is only asking for $15 million. But two days later, Mike Perez, associate vice president of facilities management, met with legislators Wednesday to request about $184.5 million for four new campus projects.
These include an ambulatory care complex, a School of Dentistry building, an up-to $10 million expansion of the University Guest House and expansions to the Chemistry Building.
The U received a $30 million gift earlier this year to build a School of Dentistry building, but doing so is contingent upon legislative authorization of a dentistry program, which would cost $2 million, Perez said.
The U is also asking for funds to purchase the Ambassador Building and an Orthopedic Center, totaling $37 million.
The legislative budget will be finalized at the end of February, and the U will be notified of its awarded funds then.
