It’s the beginning of awards season, and the Grammys have found their way to the U.
Kirsten Gunlogson, a professor of voice in the U School of Music and well-known classical singer, has been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Classical Album for her work with the Nashville Symphony Chorus.
Gunlogson, an Alaska native and graduate of Indiana University, gives voice lessons to students in vocal performance and music education at the U.
A sought-after mezzo-soprano singer, Gunlogson has performed opera across the country, from the Palm Beach Opera to the Fresno Grand Opera, to Carnegie Hall and recently in the Utah Symphony and Opera. She is also a member of the chamber trio Northern Accord, who frequently perform in concert series on college campuses, including the U and BYU.
Gunlogson’s recording of Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, released earlier this year, has been nominated for a Grammy.
The producer of the album, Blanton Alspaugh, whom she also worked with in the production of Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, has been nominated for Classical Producer of the Year.
The Grammy nomination is the first Gunlogson has received, and she said she hopes the prestige and exposure will be positive. As far as teaching goes, she doesn’t think the nomination will have an effect.
“When I teach, it’s not about me,” she said. “It’s about my students.”
She also has no plans to leave her teaching post at the U, where she has been working since 2006.
“My location is, happily, Salt Lake City, Utah,” she said.
In addition to continuing her teaching, Gunlogson has plans to perform with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra for the first time since recording the Grammy-nominated album.
“The Nashville Opera will always hold a special place in my heart,” she said. “I’m so honored to be nominated amidst such talented and exceptional artists.”
The Grammy Awards will air at 8 p.m. ET, Jan. 31, on CBS.
