Winners of Greek Week announced

After two years of coming in second, the Alpha Chi Omega sorority stood above the rest in winning the 2006 Greek Week competition.

Alpha Chi Omega won alongside teammate fraternities Alpha Tau Omega and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Greek Week generally teams fraternities with sororities to promote cooperation and community among the different houses.

"It's something we look forward to as a house…not necessarily to win, but to participate," said Aimie Faucett, president of Alpha Chi Omega.

Faucett said Greek Week is a chance to socialize and work with students from different houses on Greek Row.

Each of the six teams, comprising approximately 80 combined members, was awarded the majority of points based on attendance at different events throughout the week. Each fraternity and sorority was scored individually as well. Sigma Nu won as the individual fraternity; Pi Beta Phi won for the individual sorority.

Because the score was based on percentages, ATO, the third-smallest fraternity, could still help the team win.

"We know we don't have a large (membership), but our guys are active," said Ali Hasnain, president of Alpha Tau Omega.

Throughout the week, greek students participated in workshops, service activities and social events.

"Regardless of the stereotypes given to the greek system, these students are some of the most active in the campus community and community at large," Hasnain said. "Greek Week is a testimony to that effort."
