I listened to several speeches in front of the Union on Oct. 4 about the U's efforts toward environmental sustainability, and I was encouraged by what I heard. As someone who frequently commutes to campus by bike, I was also pleased to see a table for the U's Bike Collective, as well as a display of a plug-in electric car.
So, I was puzzled when I saw, about 25 steps away, a bright red Saab that is apparently the grand prize in The Daily Utah Chronicle contest. At best, giving this car away sends a mixed message. I only hope that whoever wins it sells it and buys a bunch of bicycles.
