Library hours unreasonable

I am writing to voice my disappointment in the university administration for its lack of concern over the intellectual climate. The university, private donors and the state and federal governments renovated the Marriott Library to the tune of 79 million and overhauled nearly every aspect of the facility...except operating hours! The library currently closes at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with midnight being the outlier of times open. Yes, my parents told me nothing good happens after midnight, but is learning that bad?

Does the university care about the intellectual climate or lack thereof due to the terrible operating hours? Other major universities have libraries that are consistently open 24 hours, and at least until midnight on the weekends. Are we not as capable? I propose that the library be open until at least 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday and until 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Anything less than this leaves the university and the students with an intellectual pyramid—something nice to look at but rarely open for business. Until things change, we will have the largest monument on any campus filled with dusty books behind locked doors.

I, too, am very annoyed when I'm on the library on Fridays and Saturdays and it closes at 6:00. I understand that the library is dealing with budget cuts, but I wonder why the library can't remain open later and just offer fewer services after 6:00 p.m. on the weekends. For example, the entrance on the first floor and the reserve desk could close at 6:00, and the library wouldn't have to pay employees to staff these areas, but it could remain open a few hours later in order to allow students to use the study areas.

I never said I like the policy. I would love for the library to be open 24-7. Means I work more and I get paid more. I'm just reporting what I've been told.
(it'd also be nice to get those raises we've been promised and for all those people to have kept their jobs).

I join David Hursey in his discontent with the library hours. It is intolerable to close so early on Friday and Saturday. When the lights flicker in the Knowledge Commons around 5:45 on Friday and Saturday, groans in perfect-pitched unison can be heard from one end to the other. Someone with power in this ivory tower save us. Adjust the hours. Will you, please?

I move that the ASUU cough up its piggy bank stuffed full from the "sustainability" fee and from the other fees it collected and has no use for in order to keep the library open more.

Brittany clearly your opinion is biased but I accept that, what I do not accept is your reasoning. Fine, I have conducted a study this week and found that NO ONE is in the library hardly at 7am-8am chop those hours per week and open it at 8am, that is five hours, tack them on the night when more people are studying. Newsflash, college students study late. As far as your localist comment about other libraries, I would happily have the library closed on Sunday and open until 8pm on friday and saturday, but that would raise to many blue flags and is thus unacceptable. For those like-minded readers who also lament at being kicked out early F/S, i know many of you academics, mosey on over to the CRCC, the business school building is open like the 7-11 on both days!

I agree with you Brittany in most of what you said. But I disagree when you said there are 12 students tops every night. I've spent a lot of time at the library and every floor has at least 30 students or more.
I do think the library should stay open on fridays and saturdays at least until 8pm even if it means closing the library around 10pm on Sundays.

I've been employed at the Marriott Library for more than four years, and while I agree with your complaint, it's just not possible. The library has had major budget cuts in the last year, resulting in dozens of long-time employees being fired and hours cut back.

Prior to the hour cutbacks last Spring, the Library was open until 2am Sunday through Thursday and until 8pm Friday and Saturday. The number of students who took advantage of the extra two hours daily wasn't worth the additional costs of keeping the Library open (maintenance and utilities fees, employee salaries, etc). Students claim they will flock to the Library after midnight, but there are only a few dozen (at most) in the Library every night.

I would hardly classify the Library's operating hours as "terrible." No other university in Utah has hours past midnight. In fact, the Marriott Library is open more hours per week than any other university in the state--Weber State closes at 11pm, and BYU is closed on Sundays (and their circulation closes at 11pm).

There may be other universities with 24-hour library service, but they likely have much higher tuition rates than we do here @ the U. Would you like to increase your tuition for those extra two hours of library time?

And we did just have a fancy renovation, but the funds for renovation come from different sources than funds for maintenance costs--donating money to renovate a building gets your name in fancy lettering on a plaque, but no one wants to donate thankless money to actually making life for students better.
